Best Vegan Sweets in Portland, Oregon

If you love sweets as much as I do and you’re vegan, you might run into a problem. Vegan pre-made cookie dough is hard to come by and making vegan baked goods is a production since we aren’t using eggs, milk, and butter. I’ve never been the best at baking, but once I became vegan, my skills drastically decreased. We can’t really just bounce over to a mini mart and grab a thing of candy when we have a sweet craving.  Gelatin, milk powder, whey, and other animal products are in just about everything there.

Luckily, I live close to Portland and I do go out of my way to hop into one of these vegan-friendly and local places when I can’t get rid of that craving. So, whether you’re new to Portland, new to being vegan, vegan-curious, or just visiting Portland, here are the best places to beat your sweet tooth!

Best Vegan Bakeries in Portland, Oregon

1. Back to Eden Bakery [Update 2023: CLOSED]

Back to Eden Bakery is attached to their cafe that serves super yummy all vegan and gluten-free food. They serve a variety of different vegan and gluten-free treats, but the cupcakes are seriously the bees-knees! They’re located on Alberta and open until 10 pm every day.

2. Doe Donuts

I am a donut fanatic and of course, Blue Star has good donuts, they only have a couple of vegan options and don’t hit the mark as Doe does. Their flavors are constantly changing with each season but so far, my favorites have been Chickin’ n Waffle, and Hibiscus Prickly Pear. They’re located on SE Powell and are pretty close to Laurelhurst so you can grab your donut and head over there afterward! They’re only open until 3, unless they sell out so pop over for an early treat.

3. Petunia’s Pies & Pastries

This is another gluten-free and vegan bakery! I recommend the Salted Caramel Cookie Bar or Buster Bar, but I don’t think you’d regret anything you can get from this bakery. The menu here is huge ranging from pies and ‘cheesecakes’ to cupcakes and cookies! The inside of this bakery looks nice and is perfect for hanging out for a bit to enjoy your treat. Located on SW 12th, until 7 pm Sundays, 8 pm Monday- Thursday, or 10 pm Friday and Saturdays.

4. Salt and Straw (in January) OR Eb & Bean

Every January Salt and Straw releases a month of all vegan flavors for their seasonal menu. At the Portland locations this year, the flavors are Toasted Coconut Milk & Cookies, Candied Apricot Faux-yo, The Elvis Peanut Butter Banana Split, Heidi Ho’s Lemon Chevre Cheesecake, and Oatmeal Moon Pie’s w/ Aquafaba Marshmallows. During the rest of the year, Salt and Straw typically includes one vegan flavor on their seasonal menu and they have Toasted Strawberry Coconut on their year-round menu.

Eb & Bean

The other option if you’re feeling ice cream/faux-yo is Eb & Bean! This faux-yo shop rotates non-dairy flavors every month. Right now their flavors include Salty Pistachio, Amarena Cherry Almond, Brown Sugar Sesame, and Mexican Chocolate! They usually have at least one flavor has an option for coconut milk and almond milk as a base.
